Zero Carbon Certification

Internationally-recognised certification for buildings powered by renewable energy to address climate change.

Zero Carbon Certification offers a bold vision for the future: one where buildings become part of the climate solution. As the only performance-based carbon standard that addresses both operational carbon (emissions from building use) and embodied carbon (emissions from construction and materials), it helps projects take real, verified steps toward decarbonisation.

To achieve certification, projects must:

Reduce energy use and embodied carbon emissions associated with construction and materials without introducing new combustion.

Generate 100% of operational energy use with new on-site or off-site renewable energy.

Disclose and offset 100% of embodied carbon emissions from building materials and construction.

Certified buildings must demonstrate real-world performance over a 12-month period and undergo third-party verification. Projects must be powered by renewables, free of combustion (or phasing it out), and outperform baseline embodied carbon benchmarks.

Amazon Sort Centre

Zero Carbon Certified

Amazon’s Craigieburn Sort Centre is Australia’s first warehouse and second Australian project overall to achieve Zero Carbon Certification, with 100% of its carbon having been assessed and addressed, demonstrating actual decarbonisation. Equipped with a smart building management system (BMS) to minimise energy use, a 22,000-litre rainwater recycling system to reduce mains water consumption, and powered by renewable energy, the full-electric Melbourne-based facility is a fantastic step forward in Amazon’s journey toward reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, as part of The Climate Pledge. Chadstone Place

Zero Carbon Certified

Chadstone Place, home to Officeworks’ national support office, is Australia’s first building to achieve Zero Carbon Certification. Led by Vicinity Centres in collaboration with Officeworks, the project transformed an existing office space into a global model for zero carbon development. The fully electrified building is powered by a 440kW on-site solar array, features natural ventilation and daylight-filled spaces, and incorporates low-carbon materials and smart retrofitting to dramatically reduce embodied carbon. Chadstone Place sets a new benchmark for sustainable, healthy work environments. See More Show Less

Why certify Zero Carbon?

Authenticity

Zero Carbon certification is the only standard to measure actual decarbonisation, not just reward carbon calculations or modest reductions.

Resilience

Zero Carbon buildings operate efficiently, phase out combustion, and use renewables. They are the safest properties when weather or energy markets shift.

Value

The world’s largest companies, investors, and cities are already decarbonising. Zero Carbon buildings are future-proof to remain valuable in a post carbon building market.
