The Living Future Institute of Australia is hosting the first National Biophilic Design Awards in 2023
The awards will recognise achievements in Australian buildings, interiors, and communities, that demonstrate the principles and benefits of biophilic design. National winners will automatically be entered into the International Living Future Institute’s Stephen R. Kellert Biophilic Design Award in 2023.
National Biophilic Design Award applications open 1 December 2022 and close 28 February 2023.

Category Judges
Hannah has taught at the University of Sydney, UTS and UNSW. She has tutored in design and lectured in design and design communications. She has sat on the NSW Chapter Council of the Australian Institute of Architects. She has been an invited juror on awards panels, including the Australian Institute of Architects Awards and the IDEA Awards and the Houses Awards. In 2020 she curated the Sydney Architecture Symposium, and she sits on the NSW State Design Review Panel (SDRP) and the NSW Health Infrastructure SDRP.
Bringing a wealth of experience, as a registered architect in Victoria (Australia) with more than 25 years’ experience, Wayne’s reputation is based on his specialisation in large-scale, transformative projects. Wayne’s architectural career has centred on façade design, involving complex geometries and progressive thinking. With experience in Australia, Europe, Russia, the Middle East and China, his design-led approach influences each aspect of a project’s development.
He has a specific interest in materials technology, emerging prototyping techniques and the future opportunities for integrating materials sourced from non-building specific industries into building cladding systems.
Wayne’s passion is to provide quality façade solutions that influence the future built environment. Having led some of the regions most celebrated architecture practices in producing ground-breaking architectural icons, his passion for façades and strong commercial acumen are a natural synergy with Inhabit’s progressive approach to the facade industry.
A strong advocate for collaborative and site-responsive design, Richard is passionate about unlocking the potential of cities by creating unique and sustainable design solutions through close engagement with local communities. Most notably, Richard led Hassell’s team in the Resilient By Design Bay Area Challenge – resulting in an award-winning, beloved public space and planning frameworks that support the San Francisco Bay Area’s long-term resilience.
Stephen’s work has included the development of global environmental assessment methods, designing and managing buildings and masterplans, embedding sustainable development into educational curriculum, and leading projects to achieve the Living Building Challenge.

Join us for an evening of biophilic design excellence as we celebrate all of our award applicants, and of course, announce the winners of the inaugural awards! In the spirit of biophilia, expect the celebration to be less like an awards presentation and rather, an opportunity to meet and celebrate biophilic design with fellow practitioners.

The Stephen R. Kellert Biophilic Design Award is administered by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI). It acknowledges Kellert’s legacy as a pioneer in articulating and applying biophilic design principles to the built environment. His advocacy has encouraged the widespread adoption of the practice of design for human-nature connection.
