What does it mean to build with materials that are safe for all species throughout time?

While seeking to answer this question, this master class covers both the Living Building Challenge (LBC) Materials, and Health + Happiness Petals. The LBC is the most stringent sustainability standard in the world. Learning what it requires and how to achieve the highest standard can benefit every project you do—while every project may not be a Living Building, every project can use healthy materials. Our three live workshops will cover the Petal requirements, explore local case studies, hear from guest speakers and apply the learnings from specification to audit. If you want to transition your skills from theory to action, this master class series is for you.

Learning Level

This course is appropriate for anyone wanting to know more about specifying regenerative materials in the built environment. A basic understanding of regenerative design for the built environment and healthy materials is recommended and would provide additional valuable context.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand the materials requirements of the LBC
  • Demonstrate knowledge and application of the Red List
  • Apply local economy sourcing requirements
  • Understand how material choices impact embodied carbon and indoor air quality (IAQ)
  • Explore the concept of waste as a resource.
  • Explore local case studies and understand how their location and typology affect material choices
  • Explore the positive impact potential of acting on the Place and Equity Petals together
