SUMMARY:Masterclass: Facilitating a biophilic design charette
DESCRIPTION:Good facilitation is an underrated skill but it can be learnt and most importantly\, practiced. \nThe Living Building Challenge requires teams to facilitate a Biophilic Design workshop as part of the Beauty Petal. If you do this well\, not only will you have a Biophilic Design strategy\, but also a project team of engaged humans who are excited and motivated to do tough things together. You will have uncovered good ideas from unexpected sources and surfaced worries that could hold the project back. In short\, a well facilitated workshop could profoundly influence the project’s success. \nBiophilic Design is used as the context but not the content for this session. If you are just interested in facilitation skills\, this would work well for you. If you would like to learn more about Biophilic Design\, we recommend our Biophilic Design 101 webinar on the 19th of June. \nPlease note: This master class will be capped at 25 participants. \nLearning Level \nThis master class is an intermediate course\, appropriate for those with general knowledge of and/or some experience with the topic. No prerequisite courses or knowledge are required; however\, we encourage you to reflect on your experience to date with facilitating and to bring to the sessions any questions you may have. \nLearning outcomes \n\nUnderstand the role of a facilitator and the key skills\nPlanning your session \nImprovisation – how to adapt when this go differently\nPractice facilitation skills\n\nFacilitator \n \nLaura Hamilton-O’Hara \nLaura holds a Master’s in Social Ecology and brings two decades of experience in environmental sustainability and social justice\, including facilitation across conservation\, leadership\, sustainability\, the built environment and public health. In 2022\, she was named one of the 50 Women in Global Sustainability Leadership by Sustainability X Magazine. Laura has held strategic roles at Taronga Zoo\, Macquarie University\, and the Centre for Sustainability Leadership\, and is now CEO of the Living Future Institute of Australia\, which champions a socially just\, culturally rich\, and ecologically restorative built environment.

SUMMARY:Masterclass: Construction as a Conservation Tool
DESCRIPTION:How might construction become a mechanism to protect and restore our precious ecosystems?\nEvery time we build\, we have an impact on local ecosystems\, and with this comes an extraordinary opportunity to protect and restore nature. By choosing where we build\, how we build and by committing to support and enhance ecosystems via our projects\, we can shift construction from being part of the problem to part of the solution. \nRecognising the opportunity for ecology and the value nature brings is the first step\, and this course will equip you with the tools and insights you need to pitch for nature\, to mobilise strategies for nature\, to navigate design with an ecology lens\, and to create solutions that embrace both humans and nature as customers. \nLearning Level \nThis master class is an intermediate course\, appropriate for those with general knowledge of and/or some experience with the topic. No prerequisite courses or knowledge are required; however\, we encourage you to reflect on your experience to date integrating nature with the built environment and to bring to the sessions any questions you may have. \nLearning outcomes \n\nUnderstand what is meant by “nature positive” and it’s role within the built environment\nIdentify and evaluate biodiversity risks and opportunities on and off site\nUnderstand the opportunity of doing this well\nExplore how to effectively incorporate “nature positive initiatives” into strategic plans\n\n5 CPD Points \nWe’ll discuss the key things you need to understand about ecology to be able to advocate and design for it\, including: \n\nAn introduction to biodiversity\nThe ecology of a site including existing ecosystems\, connectivity\, risks and opportunities\nFamiliarise yourself with the Ecology of Place Imperative as part of the Living Building Challenge\nLearn more about the embodied biodiversity impact of building materials\nInsights into mechanisms to protect nature beyond the site\n\nWith the key goal of this course for you to walk away with a suite of nature tools ready to act on today. \nDates: \n\nPLEASE NOTE: This masterclass will take place over two sessions: 27 March\, 11am -1pm AND 1 May 11am -1pm.\nThis is the equivalent of a full day workshop broken up so it can be delivered effectively online.\nApproximately 6-7 hours worth of time is required to complete this course with some homework between sessions.\n\n  \nFacilitators \n   \nProfessor Sarah Bekessy\, Stephanie Sirianni and Laura Hamilton-O’Hara
